چکیده

A new interference estimation technique is proposed for the deployment of a smart-antenna-equipped MANET (Mobile Ad hoc NETwork), acting as a secondary network, sharing the same scarce frequency band as many legacy fixed antennas (primary network) in the same area. With the help of only a coarse probabilistic estimate of each primary antenna location, the MANET can voluntarily overestimate the aggregate interference it causes to the primary network. The latter indeed imposes an aggregate interference safety margin for the former to respect, following a chosen minimum probability. By means of simulations prior to deployment, the MANET can thus assess the impact of its future spectrum sharing with the primary network, and take countermeasures accordingly. The proposed technique offers great potential, for the deployment of a cognitive MANET, since advances in millimeter radio waves technologies will soon make smart antennas easily portable in size.

Uncertainty area-based interference mitigation for cognitive radio

A new interference mitigation approach is presented for a Mobile Ad Hoc NETwork (MANET), acting as a secondary wireless network, which takes advantage of smart antennas and cognitive radio capabilities when arbitrarily deployed in the same area as a primary wireless network while both sharing the same spectrum. The MANET has to cope with the very coarse probabilistic estimate of the primary net...

Measurement-Based Spectrum Database for Flexible Spectrum Management

In this paper, we propose the novel concept of a spectrum database for improving the efficiency of spectrum utilization. In the current design of TV white space spectrum databases, a propagation model is utilized to determine the spectrum availability. However, this propagation model has poor accuracy for radio environment estimation because it requires a large interference margin for the PU co...

Software radio architecture with smart antennas: a tutorial on algorithms and complexity

Recently, there has been considerable interest in using antenna arrays in wireless communication networks to increase the capacity and decrease the cochannel interference. Adaptive beamforming with smart antennas at the receiver increases the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) in a wireless link. This paper considers a wireless network with beamforming capabilities at the receiver which allows...

Issues in Deploying Smart Antennas in Mobile Radio Networks

With the exponentially increasing demand for wireless communications the capacity of current cellular systems will soon become incapable of handling the growing traffic. Since radio frequencies are diminishing natural resources, there seems to be a fundamental barrier to further capacity increase. The solution can be found in smart antenna systems. Smart or adaptive antenna arrays consist of an...
